Few things are more frustrating than a manuscript that either isn’t working or isn’t achieving its full potential. It can feel like a broken-down car that just won’t move.
Conversely, few things are more exhilarating than a manuscript that is structurally sound, thematically rich, and narratively complete.
Often, a detailed, human evaluation can be the difference between the two.
What does the Narrative Diagnostic cover?
- Story. There is a big difference between an idea and a story. When a manuscript isn’t working, it’s often because the idea hasn’t yet—or hasn’t fully—become a story.
- Structure & Shape. It’s one thing to write 300 pages; it’s quite another to write the right 300 pages. Structure determines movement, escalation, and meaning. Finding the right narrative shape can change everything.
- Craft: character, dialogue, PoV, style, etc. Through execution, a great story is rendered into a great book.
- The Path Forward. Even in its roughest form, a story contains its own internal logic. My goal is to identify and understand that logic and to offer a clear, prescriptive path toward the manuscript’s fullest expression
What about AI?
- I’m open and pragmatic about the use of AI in the creative process. What matters the most is intentionality.
- AI can be useful—but strong writing still depends on clear structural thinking, meaningful choices, and an individual voice.
- The more transparent we are about AI, the more precise and helpful the narrative diagnostic can be.
